Our Beliefs
The Bible
We believe the Bible is God’s message to us. People wrote it while guided by God’s Spirit, and it is completely true without any errors. We believe that the Bible is applicable today. We believe that the Bible teaches us who God is, how we should live, and how we can be saved. It is the final authority in everything we believe and do.
-
We believe in a literal six-day creation
-
We believe the book of Jonah to be actual events
-
We believe that all of the miracles that are described in the Bible were actual and literal events that actually took place in the way they are described in scripture.
God
There is only one God. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfect in every way. He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. Each is fully God but has different roles.
-
God the Father rules with love and care. He made everything and is involved in our lives.
-
God the Son, Jesus, is God who became human. He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, died on the cross to pay for our sins, rose from the dead, and went back to heaven. One day, He will return
-
God the Holy Spirit helps people understand their need for Jesus, gives them new life, and helps them grow to be more like Christ.
People
God made people in His image. That means we are valuable, able to make choices, and created to know and worship God. But people chose to sin, which separated us from God. Everyone has sinned and needs God’s forgiveness and salvation.
Salvation
Salvation is God's gift. We can't earn it. Jesus died and rose again so we can be forgiven and live forever with God. When we trust Jesus, God forgives our sins, makes us new, and promises us eternal life.
God’s Purpose of Grace
God is in control and works everything out for His purpose. He chooses to save people out of His love and mercy, not because we deserve it. When we are saved, we are secure in God forever.
The Church
The church is all people who follow Jesus. Local churches are groups of believers who meet to worship, grow in faith, and share the good news. Each local church is self-led and works together with other churches for God’s mission.
-
We are an Elder-led church. This means that we have three men who serve as "pastors."
-
We also have deacons who assist the elders in the administrative and service aspects of church leadership.
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
We believe that the two ordinances of the church are Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Whereas these ordinances are a central part of Christian worship, they are not necessary for salvation.
-
Baptism is a symbol that shows we’ve trusted Jesus. It’s done by immersing someone in water to show death to sin and new life in Christ.
-
The Lord’s Supper (Communion) is a symbolic act that helps us remember Jesus' death and look forward to His return.
Last Things
Jesus will come back one day. There will be a final judgment. Believers will live forever with God in heaven. Those who reject Him will be separated from God forever.
Evangelism and Missions
Jesus told us to share the good news with everyone, everywhere. It’s every believer’s job to tell others about Him and help them follow Him.
Stewardship
Everything we have comes from God. We should use our time, money, and talents to serve Him and help others.
-
We encourage members to practice generous and sacrificial giving.
-
We view the ten percent tithe as a good template for generous and sacrificial giving.
-
We do not require or even expect visitors to give.
Family
God designed the family. Marriage is between one man and one woman. The family is a place of love, learning, and growth. Parents should teach their children about God.
-
We believe that the parents should be the primary disciple makers of their children.
-
It is the role of the church to come alongside the parents and equip them to disciple their children.
Corporate Worship
We believe it is the responsibility of every Christian to regularly gather with a consistent body of believers to worship God together.
-
We believe that worship songs should elevate and edify God.
-
We believe that all types of music can be edifying to God, and that worship flows from the heart of the ones singing rather than the type of music or instruments being played.

Spiritual Gifts
We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God gifts Christians with different gifts that are to be used for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. We believe that all of the spiritual gifts mentioned in the Bible are still currently active, although some of these gifts are more frequent or less frequent in different contexts. For example we believe that the miraculous gifts are still active, however they appear more frequently in those areas of the world where the Gospel of Jesus is being introduced or persecuted.
FAQ
Is Tammany Hills Baptist Church Reformed in Theology?
No, we would not consider ourselves to be reformed. Whereas reformed theology has shaped much of what we believe, we do not hold to the 1689 London Confession of Faith or other such reformed confessions. However, we welcome those who hold reformed or Calvinistic views as long as they understand that most of the church body and the pastor does not hold those views and that person does not cause dissention on the basis of these views.
How are the Worship songs selected?
Our worship songs are selected by our worship leader under the supervision of the Elders of the church. The criteria that we look for in worship songs are:
-
The lyrics are theologically sound,
-
The emphasis of the song is on who God is, or what God has done. We do not sing about how God makes us feel or what we expect God to do for us.
-
The song is easy for the common person to sing in a corporate setting.
-
We will use songs that are written by churches or people that we may not agree with theologically as long as that particular song is theologically sound and it meets the other criteria that we look for.

What is the church's stance on Speaking in Tongues?
Whereas we see nothing in the Bible that condemns speaking in tongues or alludes that the gift is no longer present, we recognize the parameters that scripture puts around the use of this gift. In regard to glossolalia tongues, (speaking unknown words and sounds) during a worship service: only one or two people should ever address the congregation while speaking in tongues, and when this occurs it must be interpreted by a person who has been confirmed as a prophet by the elders of the church.
Any person claiming to be a prophet must be tested by the elders of the church. The prophet must be able to perform his or her gift by giving the elders a clear and specific prophecy that must come to pass in an unmistakable manner, within a relatively short time frame. The nature of the test prophecy cannot be vague and the fulfillment of the prophecy be apparent and seem miraculous in nature. Any person claiming to be a prophet must be tested before they are permitted to prophesize over members of the congregation or interpret tongues.
